Of the 1.21 billion people counted in India in March 2011, 377 million are urban dwellers. The urban settlements of the country have experienced relatively rapid population growth and the percentage of India’s population living in urban areas has doubled from 14% at the time of independence to 31.8 % in 2011 (Census of India).
